What Happens If You Drink Kombucha Every Day?

Kombucha has some great health benefits, but what would happen if you incorporated it into your daily routine?

Whether you're a kombucha lover or just want to know what they hype is about, keep reading to find out why making drinking kombucha a habit could benefit you.

Improving your gut health

One of the biggest benefits of kombucha is its impact on gut health.

Gut health refers to the optimal functioning of the entire digestive system, from the mouth to the colon, and the balance of microorganisms within it. This complex ecosystem, known as the gut microbiome, includes trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that play crucial roles in digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function.

Maintaining a healthy gut is vital because it influences nearly every aspect of our well-being.

A balanced gut microbiome aids in efficient digestion, prevents gastrointestinal issues like bloating and constipation, and enhances the body's ability to fend off infections. It's also though that gut health can impact our mental clarity, mood, and even anxiety and depression.

Nurturing your gut health is not just about improving digestion but also about supporting our overall physical and mental health.

How can kombucha help?

Kombucha is rich in probiotics—live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your digestive system. These probiotics help balance the gut microbiota, which plays a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function and can help to  alleviate common digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Improve your mood

We now know that your gut influences your mood! In fact your gut is often referred to as your second brain... or the enteric nervous system (ENS).

"Researchers are finding evidence that irritation in the gastrointestinal system may send signals to the central nervous system (CNS) that trigger mood changes." (John Hopkins).

Serotonin, the "happy hormone," is also  produced in the gut and influences your mood, sleep, and appetite.

Keeping your gut happy, could therefore be the key to your own mental health.

The beneficial probiotics in kombucha that help your gut could contribute to a more balanced mood too!

Improve your overall health

Drinking kombucha will have its impact on your body and overall health overtime. You could notice a healthier pattern in your bowel movements, less bloating, less reflux/heartburn and can be very detoxifying on our system as it is rich in antioxidants reducing inflammation and supports our immune system.

You will also boost your hydration levels by drinking it daily and see a positive change in energy levels.

Support your weight management

Our resident nutritionist Claire Meakin explains how kombucha can support your weight management.

"Kombucha may support overall weight management by supporting digestion and gut health, but it's not a stand-alone solution for targeting weight loss.

With that being said, consuming kombucha on an empty stomach has been identified to enhance its detoxification and probiotic effects. When
consumed at meal times, it then enhances its ability to help with digestion.

When you improve your levels of good bacteria in the gut, you will process nutrients better and filter waste more efficiently. Kombucha has natural probiotics and if you drink it regularly throughout the day, this contribution will rebalance the bacteria that live in your digestive system, help reduce bloating, and also help curb any sugar cravings; all helpful for weight management and feeling better in yourself!

What’s more, it is made with natural sugars and full of healthy nutrients instead of empty calories.

By choosing a kombucha over a fizzy, you will not only cut on the calories, but above all you will gain health."

Can you drink kombucha more than once a day?

"You may never have tried kombucha before or maybe you drink it regularly. In the end, there’s no one-size-fits all answer to how much kombucha you should be drinking but, start with about 100ml a day.

Depending on tolerance, increase the dose to take it a couple or three times a day. If you are experiencing bloating, take it 30 minutes before meals."

Adding kombucha into your daily routine could be a simple step to helping you achieve better gut health.

However, as Claire Meakin advises, it should "not solely [be] relied upon for these benefits; as with sources of fibre from our fruit and veggies. Your best bet to promote gut health is to mix things up, keep the focus on the diet and swap out the sugary fizzy to a healthy and nourishing kombucha."
